In 2001 I bought the domain name albournestone.co.uk through Yell as, at that time, it prioritised my listing with them, the link deliberately only gives my contact details. Last year the they caught me with their abyssmal SEO created website scheme and put up websites in the names of albournestoneandmarble.co.uk and albournestonemarblelewes.co.uk which took a lot of effort to have taken down. (see my postings elsewhere)
Then out of the blue, one year on, I get this email from them:

Your domain name albournestone.co.uk has been linked to your new Yellsite website. Please allow up to 72 hours for your domain name to update across the internet.

Can I have permission to scream?

Unfortunately it’s still happening! I found a YELL SEO site relating to my business just last week – a client had found it and asked why we had changed our website!!!!!!! Absolutely gobsmacked with the shocking design and quality of the site, a ‘call counter’ number took me straight through to my business. Called YELL and they said it had been live since 2009, the last time I advertised with them as they made such a hash of last years directory advert I cancelled it! The worse thing is that the address/google map that is shown on the page is my home address as they have used the ‘accounts’ address – I really can’t believe that they are able to do this.

I asked them to send me proof that I had signed a release for the SEO site, and that I expected someone to call me and give me an explanation as well as the number of people that had visited the site. Guess what…………. still waiting. Does anyone know where I stand legally?

I’m sure Yell is commiting some sort of fraud:

Eventually Yell took down my SEO site and sent me this:

“As requested, please find attached a PDF which hopefully will explain
what the SEO Page is and how it works.”

Interestingly even the owners of the site used in Yells brochure have had it removed!

Really sorry to hear that you have been affected too. We can’t believe that Yell are still continuing with this policy and damaging the small businesses that surely must be their lifeblood to grab a share of today’s limited advertising revenue.

I recently returned from holiday and was confused as to why I hadn’t received any client enquiries on my iphone while I was away. Upon my return I googled popular search requests for my company and found my small business website no longer appears anywhere! Yell have purchased a domain name without my consent and set up what can only be descibed as an amateur, illiterate farcical site that now prevents prospective clients from finding me. If any are lucky enough to actually come across the new site pages they will be quickly put off by the nonsensical rubbish displayed.

I have contacted Yell today to demand they withdraw it so as the site i have spent many hours designing can once again prove lucrative. Currently i may as well not even have a website!

Can anyone inform me as to why the new sonningmowersreading.co.uk domain they have purchased makes sonningmowers.com useless?

I am a small business and this issue has serious financial implications.

For the record yell.com seem to be following this same ridiculous policy at the time of writing – May 2011. Thanks for the info, I found it through a Google Search. Disappointed.

I’ve been Yelled.
It would be so easy for it to work well, however;

“Unfortunately, we are not able to make any changes to the following
details: Maps Template, Colour or Layout Add Logos Add Pictures Service areas
“Call to Action”
Information in generic business paragraphs”

A simple explanation like:
“This is a Yell generated site for SEO purposes.
Please see or call xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx for full information on their services.”
would do
I’ve sent them this request:

I would be pleased to know how you believe this to be SEO’d
Description and Keywords have few common, expected or relevent search terms;
Please have the courtesy to explain.

As per your terms and conditions para 4:
Please remove this site, as it totally fails your claims on all counts and forward the domain name to http://www.AlbourneStone.co.uk for my legitimate use.
